Outcomes of Participant Investment Strategies 2001 - 2010 - Assumptions: The study examined the performance of portfolios of 273,193 retirement plan participants contributing to their employer's Defined Contribution plans through an ARA group annuity contract issued by John Hancock USA.

Outcomes of Participant Investment Strategies 2006 - 2010 - Assumptions: The study examined the performance of portfolios of 11,383 retirement plan participants contributing to their employer's Defined Contribution plans through an ARA group annuity contract issued by John Hancock New York.

The two groups, Lifestyle and Non-Lifestyle participants, were segmented based on their age or the level of investment risk inherent in the allocation strategies they selected. All participants selected met all of the following criteria: had an ending balance that was greater than zero; did not have a negative cash flow; did not maintain a loan and had a birth date on record. The Burgess + Associates studies have not been approved by all firms. For more information or to obtain copies of the studies, speak to your John Hancock representative.

+ Guarantees are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company. Although Guaranteed Income for Life provides a guaranteed income base as well as guaranteed minimum withdrawal benefits, Guaranteed Income for Life investment options are variable investments and may lose value. Any withdrawal that takes a participant over their guaranteed lifetime income amount will reduce future guaranteed minimum withdrawal benefits. The guarantees provided are contingent on the plan's trustee's election to continue maintaining its group annuity contract with John Hancock or the election of a participant to rollover his or her benefits to a recipient rollover vehicle available from John Hancock upon termination of participation in the plan or the termination of the group annuity contract by the plan's trustee. The Benefit Base is not a cash value and cannot be taken as a lump sum. The Vested Benefit Base determines the guaranteed income amount a participant can receive at retirement.

A Plan Trustee should consider the objectives, risks, charges, and expenses of the investment options to which the feature applies and the limitations, terms and conditions of the feature as set forth in the Lifetime Income Benefit Rider before selecting this feature. An additional fee is charged for the guarantee.
